CATTLE IN STORM representing a herd of cattle led by the leader,
seeking safety from a gathering storm, reproduced from a large steel
engraving after a picture by J. McWhirter, the original engraving was
loaned by Mrs. C. D. Johnson to the Tran-Mississippi Exhibition in
Omaha, Nebraska in 1898. Color light brown."

Comments:
The engraving comes in an original heavy card 8½" tall x 11" wide matte
cut Presentation Folder. (shown Below).
The engraving itself is die sunk into a heavy stock paper, watermarked
"Strathmore Broadcaster". The outside overall paper dimensions are 7½"
tall by 9⅜" wide. The engraved area itself measures 4¾" wide by 3⅝"
tall. The engraving is entitled "Western Cattle in Storm" and the
attributions are "After Painting by McWhirter" and "Edward J. Dillon.
This is after an original painting called "The Vanguard" by J. McWhirter
(see image below) displayed in London, 1 June 1887, and used as the
model for the United States Postal Service $1 Black Trans-Mississippi
Issue (Scott Catalogue #292 - see image below) - considered by many
philatelists to be the most beautiful American Stamp ever produced. This
particular engraving was done by Edward J. Dillon. Is this a
presentation set from the Trans-Mississippi Exhibition?
